Restoring a 300 year old long Oak table 1

This lovely refectory table was in dire need of restoration. The table was in a poor condition when it came in. It’s 300 years old, made from a single, 13.5 feet long piece of oak, had been kept in a conservatory for years and three drawers had gone missing over time. This meant that it was exposed to hot summer and cold winter temperatures and, as a consequence, the top of the table had split, as you can see in the first pictures. It had also developed a sag in the middle mainly because it was only supported by two pillar bases, one at either end, and both of which needed repair too.

I had to cut all the joints to separate the top of the table from the supporting frame and base so that I could get to everything that needed repairing

The solution to the sag was solved by making a brand new central base pillar, taking care to make it look identical to the other two. Now the the weight of the table is spread across three, rather than two supports..

I then made three drawers to replace those that had been lost and started to re-assemble the table by remaking and gluing all the joints

I then made sure the table top was totally flat, re-distressed the surface using the stone that you can see in the pictures, to make sure that the table looked good, but was in keeping with its age, as per the customer’s instructions.
